2010: The big year for tech

Opening with the launch of Google’s Nexus One, 2010 is shaping up to be a massive year full of mind-blowing technology releases. While the Apple tablet computer will be the next highly anticipated cab off the rank, gaming enthusiasts are already steadying themselves for the just-in-time-for-Santa Christmas 2010 unveiling of “Project Natal”.

We’ve previously mentioned Microsoft’s take on the tech that has made Nintendo’s Wii such a success. Referred to as a “full-body motion control system”, the Xbox’s one-up on the popular Wii will be that it functions without a hand-controller. Although the Xbox is known as the console du jour for serious gamers, Project Natal will, as the Wii has done for Nintendo, open Microsoft’s Xbox to families simply keen for holiday fun.

And although Apple will no doubt have plenty in store for a big 2010, Microsoft have enjoyed a pleasing start to the year’s business. As reported by Fast Company, according to Craig Beilinson, the Director of Marketing for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, “Windows 7 is by far the fastest selling Operating System in history." Hopefully Microsoft will soon release the data behind the claims but it is hardly surprising. While the Tupperware-esque launch parties may have been a questionable marketing option, the  widespread nature of them (and the trainwreck that was Windows Vista) have obviously delivered favourable outcomes.

Finally, from the Facebook fugitive files, comes the story of a British criminal that has spent much of the festive season mocking police with his status updates. In the style of Maxi Sopo, convicted burgular Craig “Lazie” Lynch, escaped from his open prison, and has tantalised empty-handed police with tales - and photos - of his life on the run. Lynch has clearly been enjoying his fifteen minutes of fame, actively seeking out fans and “friends” on the social networking site. Facebook is reportedly assisting British police with tracking down Lynch’s location.
