Start Something Big
Don't spread yourself too thin
One thing that's very important when running a web business is making sure that you have an extremely focused niche. In other words, what you do must be narrowly focused so that people who are on your site are there for one reason only.
When we ran Stayz, we had a few competitors who put advertising all over their website and offered all sorts of deals and services other than holiday accommodation e.g. cars for hire, tours, etc. In addition, they had advertising from other companies all over their website.
Now here is the problem: a person visits the website expecting to find holiday accommodation because that's what’s been advertised by your company. However, upon entering the website, they are distracted by a number of advertisements for other products and it becomes distracting and overwhelming.
What we did with Stayz was focus exclusively on what our site was there for - holiday homes. With just one click, visitors were viewing a list of hundreds and hundreds of properties with photos that they could potentially rent. By doing this, it meant that rather than them choosing between our website and a competitor’s to find accommodation, once they got onto our website, the decision then became which of these holiday homes do I choose?
Online, you want to make sure you're the number one resource in your industry.
Users will appreciate the fact that your website is so narrowly focused and you'll come across as an expert, specializing in that one particular area. If you're trying to do all sorts of things, it comes off as rather desperate and it confuses and/or alienates people. They’ll end up leaving your website in search of another one that specialises in what they're after.
